Description
A single owl shown in three-quarter or frontal view, with the title pointing to the soft, puffed-up plumage that mezzotint is particularly suited to render. The technique's tonal range — produced by varying how aggressively the rocker-laid burr is scraped or burnished — allows feather edges to dissolve into dark surroundings rather than terminating in a hard line, which is what gives Ikuta's owls their characteristic tactile, almost touchable quality. The bird's eyes are likely the brightest scraped passages on the plate, with the rest of the body modulated through a continuous middle range. This intimate single-bird format runs throughout his catalogue and represents the simplest expression of his compositional logic: one subject, centered, lit out of the dark. The 2003 date places the print in the period when his international gallery presence — particularly in the United States and Europe — was firmly established and the demand for owl subjects was at its strongest.
