Description
A print selected for the juried Americas regional exhibition at the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, a region with a [washi](/glossary/washi) papermaking heritage extending back roughly 1,500 years. IMC juried exhibitions present contemporary mokuhanga from practitioners worldwide, with works typically showing the water-based pigment techniques and multi-block registration methods adapted from Edo-period [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) production. Townsend's inclusion situates her work alongside other Americas-region artists exploring the medium's contemporary applications. The piece would have been pulled using traditional [baren](/glossary/baren) burnishing on washi, with hand-mixed pigments bound by rice paste (nori) and applied to carved cherry or shina blocks. Within the IMC exhibition framework, regional submissions are grouped to show how mokuhanga practice has dispersed beyond Japan while retaining its core technical vocabulary. The work reflects Townsend's ongoing engagement with the International Mokuhanga Association network and her position within the growing community of North American mokuhanga practitioners.
