Description
As one of Egger's untitled works tied to the 2021 IMC exhibition, this print sits within a European mokuhanga community that has developed steadily since the 1990s. Austrian and broader Central European engagement with the medium has been driven by residencies in Japan, the MI-LAB program at Lake Kawaguchi, and the international circulation of conference exhibitions. The technical demands of mokuhanga — controlled [washi](/glossary/washi) dampness, water-based pigments mixed with nori (rice paste), hand-burnished [baren](/glossary/baren) printing — require sustained practice to master, and contemporary practitioners working outside Japan typically train through a combination of residencies and self-directed studio work. Egger's selection for the IMC juried exhibition represents both individual recognition and Austria's participation in the international transmission of the technique. The untitled framing here is consistent with the conventions of the contemporary fine-art mokuhanga circuit in which the IMC operates.
