Description
Fragile, Take Care is an abstract relief print whose title functions as both instruction and theme, directing attention to vulnerability as a material and conceptual subject. Johnson may have built the composition around forms that appear provisional or at risk — isolated marks, thin passages, open negative space — so that the print communicates fragility through formal means rather than representation. Relief printing, which removes material from a block to produce the image, is itself a process of working at edges and thresholds where too much pressure or a misplaced cut can damage what is being made. This structural logic — the vulnerability of the matrix — is appropriate to the work's subject. Printed on handmade paper, the substrate adds a further layer of material consciousness: handmade sheets have visible fiber structure, deckled edges, and tonal variation that remind the viewer of their physical, fragile existence as objects in the world.
