Description
This print was Price's submission to the juried international exhibition at the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen, where it was displayed within the Oceania regional grouping. Echizen is one of the historic centers of [washi](/glossary/washi) production in Japan, and works submitted to the IMC are typically printed on locally produced [kozo](/glossary/kozo) papers, drawing the conference's technical conversation into close proximity with the materials themselves. As a mokuhanga work, the print would have been hand-printed with a [baren](/glossary/baren) using water-based pigments and rice paste, the sequential application of carved cherry or shina blocks producing the soft tonal layering and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations characteristic of the medium. Price's selection for the Echizen exhibition followed her earlier inclusion in the 2021 IMC in Nara, marking sustained engagement with the international mokuhanga community across conference cycles. The work sits within a broader Australian mokuhanga practice that has grown steadily through IMC participation, with Oceania-region printmakers contributing distinct subject matter and palette choices to a tradition rooted in Edo-period Japanese technique.
