Description
This print represents Martha Braun's selected entry for the juried exhibition at the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference, held in Echizen — a region of Fukui Prefecture historically associated with [kozo](/glossary/kozo)-fiber [washi](/glossary/washi) production. Mokuhanga prints in the IMC exhibitions typically demonstrate hand-printed water-based pigment techniques worked with the [baren](/glossary/baren) onto washi, often incorporating [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations and multiple block registrations characteristic of the medium. As part of the Americas regional grouping, Braun's submission was shown alongside work by other North and South American practitioners exploring how the Japanese woodblock tradition adapts to contemporary studio practice outside Japan. The IMC exhibitions emphasize technical command of kentō registration, the layering of transparent and opaque water-based pigments, and the tactile quality of washi fibers visible through hand-burnished impressions. Braun's inclusion places her within the international network of mokuhanga artists whose practice has been formally recognized through this gathering, which rotates between Japan and partner host institutions.
