Description

Fragrant Wind, identified as a color aquatint and etching, indicates a multi-plate or multi-color process more elaborate than the monochrome aquatint that characterizes much of Asahi's work. The title points to an atmospheric or floral subject — wind made visible through the carriage of scent — which in printmaking typically resolves as a figure surrounded by drifting plant matter or as a landscape stirred by an implied current of air. Aquatint is well suited to the soft, granular tonalities required for such subjects, while etched line provides the contours of any figures, blossoms, or attendant creatures. The print belongs to the quieter, less dragon-centered side of Asahi's output, alongside her moonlight and music-spirit imagery, where the supernatural element is implied through atmosphere rather than through explicit creatures. Even in this register, the flora and any human-like beings remain inventions of her closed mythological system rather than depictions of observed nature.
