Description
Kaleidoscope draws its title from the fractured, mirror-like patterning that recurs in Asahi's compositions, where figures from her invented mythology often multiply or repeat across the plate. Worked in line etching with aquatint passages, the print likely uses bitten outlines for the sharp geometric divisions and sustained tonal aquatint for the surrounding fields, a structure her smaller intaglio prints frequently follow. The kaleidoscopic conceit is consistent with her interest in dream-like spatial logic — her water-weavers, dragon-masters, and traveling spirits often occupy worlds without fixed horizon or scale. Asahi has worked exclusively in intaglio since her studies at Ritsumeikan University, and over the past two decades her plates have circulated through European and American print dealers as small editions, typically signed and numbered in pencil beneath the platemark. Within her catalogue, thematic works such as Kaleidoscope sit alongside the named protagonists of her mythology and tend to function as visual studies of the textures and patterns she returns to in larger figural plates.
