Description
"Play of a Gourd" (瓢箪ぼっくり, Hyotan bokkuri) depicts children playing with a gourd — possibly the traditional gourd rattle or a game involving a decorated gourd — in one of Shuntei's studies of specific traditional children's toys and games. The gourd (hyotan) was a common household object and a traditional toy, its distinctive shape and rattling sound making it a natural children's plaything. Shuntei renders the specific interaction between child and object with his characteristic attention to the precise dynamics of play.
