Description
Sewing was among the most frequently depicted domestic accomplishments in Meiji [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga), signaling feminine refinement alongside music and calligraphy. Shuntei's composition likely shows a woman seated in a conventional interior, needle and fabric in hand, rendered with the fine line work characteristic of his illustrative style. Textile patterning — on both the subject's kimono and the fabric she works — would have required intricate key-block cutting and multiple successive color impressions to achieve the layered pattern effects possible in [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) printing. The designation '(1)' suggests multiple compositions on this theme. Interior light, rendered through tonal passages on skin and wall surfaces, would differentiate this from an outdoor genre subject.
