A shunga print from 1900 — an erotic subject within the long tradition of Japanese erotic art that ran parallel to more publicly displayed woodblock print production. Shuntei's shunga output, like that of most ukiyo-e masters before him, was a recognized if semi-private genre within the broader print trade. The 1900 date places this work in the Meiji period's complex negotiation of tradition and modernity, when shunga continued to be produced while public morality regulations made its open circulation increasingly constrained.
