Description
The third print in Shuntei's [shunga](/glossary/shunga) sequence continues the erotic subject matter that forms a distinct genre within Japanese woodblock printing. Shunga were produced across all eras of [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e), and Shuntei's examples align with the late-Meiji continuation of this tradition. The prints in such sequences typically varied setting, posture, and textile combination while maintaining compositional coherence across sheets. The printing quality in such works frequently matched or exceeded that of mainstream commercial prints, as the private nature of the market permitted investment in dense color layering and fine key-block cutting. Kimono fabrics shown in intimate disarray provided a vehicle for demonstrating high-level textile pattern printing alongside the principal subject.
