Description
The fourth image in Shuntei's [shunga](/glossary/shunga) series represents the continuation of an album or portfolio sequence following established conventions of the genre. Japanese erotic prints were typically produced in sets of twelve — a standard album format — though sequences of varying lengths are known. Compositionally, this print would vary the pairing and setting while maintaining the characteristic close framing of figures within an intimate interior. The technical demands of shunga production — rendering skin tones, complex textile patterns, and architectural interior details simultaneously — were considerable, and surviving examples by Meiji-era artists demonstrate that [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) printing techniques were applied without reduction in quality. The numbered sequence indicates these prints were conceived as a unified set.
