Description
Tōsenkyo (投扇興) is a traditional Japanese parlor game in which players toss a folding fan to dislodge a small stand-mounted target, with point values determined by the configuration of fallen pieces — the game's scoring system derives from The Tale of Genji chapter names. Popular in the late Edo and Meiji periods, tōsenkyo was depicted in woodblock prints as a marker of refined feminine leisure. Shuntei's print likely shows women in a tatami interior arranged around the game stand, fans in hand. The folding fan (ōgi) would have been rendered with attention to its decorated surface, providing a vehicle for detailed pattern printing within the composition.
