Description
An untitled woodblock print by Miyagawa Shuntei, this work is held in a museum collection without a title inscription surviving in the record. Shuntei was active as both a printmaker and an illustrator, and his output spans single-sheet prints, album formats, and printed books. His [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) subjects follow late Meiji conventions: women depicted in three-quarter view, often turning slightly toward or away from the viewer, with elaborate hairstyles rendered through fine keyblock lines and solid hair-black ink. Landscape backgrounds, when present, are subordinated to the figure and applied in thin, even washes that do not compete with the costume's color. The medium—woodblock print on [washi](/glossary/washi)—places this work within a centuries-old technical tradition that Shuntei worked within during a period of considerable change in Japanese print publishing. The subject cannot be identified without additional documentation.
