Description
This untitled woodblock print by Miyagawa Shuntei is one of multiple works attributed to him in public collections that lack individual title inscriptions. Without access to the image, the subject cannot be determined with specificity. Shuntei's documented [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) output shows facility with the representation of women across age ranges and social settings — from young women in fashionable Meiji-era dress to more classical compositions evoking earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) figure types. Technical qualities in prints of this period typically include a fine keyblock line defining figure contours and facial features, with subsequent color blocks providing flat or graded tone fields across kimono, background, and atmospheric passages. The [washi](/glossary/washi) support, dampened slightly before printing to improve pigment absorption, gives the finished surface a characteristic tactile softness.
