Description
This untitled print is one of several works by Miyagawa Shuntei held in collections without identifying inscription. Shuntei's training as an illustrator and printmaker placed him at the intersection of traditional woodblock technique and the commercial print culture of the Meiji period. Works in this category often depict bijin in kimono arranged in two- or three-figure compositions, set against backgrounds suggesting interior domestic space or garden settings. Seasonal cues — flowering branches, summer fans, autumn foliage — frequently serve as the compositional anchor in such prints, locating the figure within a temporal and emotional register. The [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) technique employed would use multiple woodblocks inked with water-based pigments and printed in precise registration on sized [washi](/glossary/washi) to achieve the layered color depth characteristic of the format.
