Description
The fourth print in this group continues the artist's investigation of the everyday at close range. Intaglio etching, with its precise control over line weight and the embossed pressure of the plate against dampened paper, suits Morisue's subject matter: the small utensils, scraps, and household items that her practice elevates to the status of sustained observation. The compositions tend to be spare — a single object or small grouping centered within the plate — with the surrounding paper given as much visual weight as the depicted form. This restraint distinguishes her work from intaglio practices that fill the plate edge to edge and aligns it with a longer Japanese tradition of leaving negative space active. Born in Kyoto in 1982, trained at Kyoto City University of Arts, and based in the city throughout her career, Morisue has shown primarily through Gallery Hosokawa in Osaka. Her inclusion in the 3rd PATinKyoto Print Art Triennale in 2022 marked a public recognition of this body of small-format etchings.
