Description
Monologue is an abstract work combining woodcut and etching on [washi](/glossary/washi), the technique that earned Muto Shogo an Excellence Prize at the 2023 Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition. The title suggests an inward, self-directed visual statement — a single voice rendered in mark rather than word. By working in both relief and intaglio within a single print, Muto is able to draw on the distinct graphic registers of each process: the woodcut contributes broad, directional grain and decisive tonal passages, while the etching introduces finer, more controlled linework and subtle tonal gradations through aquatint or drypoint passages. The absorbent surface of washi mediates between these two technically demanding processes, accepting both the pressure of the [baren](/glossary/baren) and the bite of inked intaglio lines. The miniature format — characteristic of the Awagami exhibition — concentrates the compositional tension into a compressed field, amplifying the contrast between the two mark-making systems. The result is a print that uses formal means to explore a psychological or introspective theme.
