Description
This print is Rougeau's juried submission to the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture — a region historically central to [washi](/glossary/washi) production, where [kozo](/glossary/kozo) paper has been made for over 1,500 years. The work was displayed in the Americas regional section of the exhibition. As a mokuhanga print, it would have been produced using water-based pigments applied with hake brushes and transferred to washi via [baren](/glossary/baren), the bamboo-covered disc used for hand-pressing. Contemporary practitioners working within the IMC framework typically engage with the medium's distinctive qualities: visible woodgrain registering through the printed surface, controlled tonal gradation through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi), and the absorbent, fibrous character of handmade washi. Rougeau's selection for both the 2021 Nara and 2024 Echizen conferences places her among American artists who have developed their practice through the international mokuhanga revival often associated with MI-LAB residencies and IMC exchange. Without a direct visual record of this specific submission, what is documented is its inclusion in a curated exhibition representing the Americas regional cohort.
