Description
This print depicts the residence and workshop of a traditional ceramist in Kyoto, rendered in Morimura's signature style of geometric simplification balanced against organic detail. The composition presents the timber-framed house with its pitched tiled roof, plastered walls, and lattice screens, likely with a kiln or pottery vessels visible in the courtyard. Morimura builds his images through dozens of carefully registered blocks printed by hand with the baren on washi, allowing flat planes of color to define architectural mass while finer keyblock work articulates latticework, foliage, and roof tiles. The subject reflects his sustained interest in vernacular Japanese craft architecture — buildings whose form is shaped by the working life within them. As part of his broader documentation of Kyoto's machiya and craft districts, the print sits within the contemporary mokuhanga revival, in which artists like Morimura, Sarah Brayer, and Daniel Kelly have extended the sōsaku-hanga (creative print) tradition by designing, carving, and printing each work themselves.
