Description

Kaminarimon — the 'Thunder Gate' — is the outer gate of Sensō-ji in Asakusa, Tokyo, identifiable by its enormous red paper lantern (chōchin) flanked by the guardian deities Fūjin and Raijin. Morimura's rendering centers the massive lantern against the deep vermilion gate timbers, with the curving karahafu roofline and white plaster panels cropped tightly to fill the picture plane. The flat geometry of the gate's structure suits his compositional approach: rectilinear architecture is reduced to interlocking color planes, and the keyblock carries the calligraphic characters on the lantern (雷門) and the patterning of the roof tiles. As a frequently depicted Tokyo landmark, Kaminarimon appears across the work of Yoshida Hiroshi, Kasamatsu Shirō, and Kawase Hasui; Morimura's contribution updates the subject within the sōsaku-hanga lineage, with the artist designing, carving, and printing the blocks himself on washi. The print situates his urban output alongside his more frequent rural temple and shrine subjects.
