Drawn Back

Drawn Back (2017), a pastel-on-paper work by Sara Lee, is an almost monochromatic composition in pale blue-gray tones. A soft horizontal line roughly three-quarters of the way down splits the image into two flat zones — a lighter, hazy upper field and a slightly denser, darker lower field — meeting in a line that reads as a horizon. No figures or other forms appear; faint vertical striations are visible in the upper field, and the overall effect is quiet, still, and atmospheric.
