Description
This print was selected through the juried process for the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen, one of Japan's historic centres of handmade [washi](/glossary/washi) production and a culturally significant venue for the triennial gathering of contemporary mokuhanga practitioners. Mitchell's submission appeared in the conference's Europe and Africa regional exhibition, presenting her practice alongside other UK and European printmakers working in the Japanese woodblock tradition. IMC juried selection signals that the work meets standards established by the international mokuhanga community for materials and technique: water-based pigments, [kozo](/glossary/kozo) or [gampi](/glossary/gampi) washi, [baren](/glossary/baren) burnishing, and kentō registration across separately carved blocks. As a representative work from a juried international showing, this submission documents Mitchell's standing within the contemporary diaspora of mokuhanga makers extending the tradition outside Japan, and marks the point at which her practice entered the wider record of European hand-pulled woodblock printmaking.
