Description
The single-word title Polar admits multiple readings: a reference to the polar regions and their associated palette of whites, pale blues, and grays; a more abstract evocation of opposition or extremes; or a compositional structure organized around two opposing poles. Each reading is consistent with the visual vocabulary of late-twentieth-century Japanese mokuhanga, in which restrained color and large simple forms became standard. The technical demands of a polar palette in woodblock printing favor careful registration of pale tones on a high-quality [washi](/glossary/washi) ground, where small variations in [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure and pigment density become legible. The print sits within Sawada's documented circulation among collectors but, like much of his output, lacks contextual notes on edition size or printing date. Its untitled placement in catalogues alongside dated works suggests it may belong to the same late-1980s to early-1990s working period as the Mirror, Dawn, and Arise pieces.
