歌舞伎座
This lithograph depicts the Kabukiza, the principal kabuki theater in Tokyo's Ginza district, as part of Sonoyama Harumi's contribution to the collaborative portfolio 'One Hundred Views of Tokyo, Message to the 21st Century' (1989–1999). The building shown is the fourth-generation Kabukiza, completed in 1951 and designed by Yoshida Isoya in a hybrid architectural style that combines a grand irimoya-style tiled roof with Western structural elements — a form familiarly associated with the theater in the late twentieth century. Lithography, with its capacity for tonal gradation and architectural detail, suits the rendering of the theater's ornate facade, layered rooflines, and lantern-lit entrance. As a meisho subject, the Kabukiza functions here both as a recognizable urban landmark and as a symbol of living classical performance culture within the modernizing city. The print situates traditional cultural identity against the commercial density of Ginza, reflecting the portfolio's broader meditation on Tokyo's continuities and transformations at the century's close.
Kabukiza [Kabuki Theater] (歌舞伎座) was created by Sonoyama Harumi (園山晴巳).
Kabukiza [Kabuki Theater] depicts one hundred views of tokyo, architecture, and theater.
Kabukiza [Kabuki Theater] measures 50 × 68 cm.
