Description
The one hundred fifty-fifth iris in Sugiura Kazutoshi's series is positioned near the conclusion of a project that spans more than one hundred and sixty numbered works — each one a color woodblock print combining Sugiura's signature silkscreen overprinting with gold-leaf application. At No. 155, the flower has been contemplated so many times that it exists as much as an artistic idea as a botanical specimen, the accumulated decisions of a decades-long project giving each new iris a kind of compressed history. These late-series works feel less like observations of nature than like distillations of all previous observations.
