This untitled woodblock print by Sugiura Kazutoshi (b. 1938) represents the artist's distinctive multi-layered approach to the traditional Japanese botanical subject. After graduating from the Public College for Art in Kyoto in 1963 and spending five years studying classical Japanese painting at the Kyoto National Museum, Sugiura developed a technique combining woodblock printing with silkscreen overprinting and gold-leaf application. His numbered series of irises, peonies, and other flowers entered prestigious collections worldwide, earning him a place among the leading postwar Japanese printmakers.
