Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
This undescribed work from Sugiura Kazutoshi's printmaking practice represents a body of work that spans several decades and encompasses numbered series devoted to irises, peonies, camellias, roses, lilies, and other botanical subjects. Sugiura's approach to the traditional Japanese flower print is distinguished by his technical innovation: the combination of woodblock carving, silkscreen overprinting, and gold-leaf application creates a layered surface effect that has no exact precedent in either the [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) tradition or the postwar [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) movement. His prints appear regularly in international auction records and continue to be collected by major institutions.
