Description
This print was Rushforth's accepted submission to the Juried International Mokuhanga Exhibition held during the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC 2024) in Echizen, Japan, where it was shown in the Oceania regional grouping. As a mokuhanga, the work was produced using water-based pigments hand-rubbed into [washi](/glossary/washi) with a [baren](/glossary/baren) rather than oil-based inks and a press, the defining technical constraint of the IMC juried context. Echizen, the host region, is itself one of Japan's principal washi-producing districts, and prints accepted into the exhibition are typically pulled on Echizen-made papers, linking material and venue. Rushforth's inclusion situates the work within the contemporary Australian mokuhanga cohort that has built sustained engagement with the International Mokuhanga Association across the Nara (2021) and Echizen (2024) conferences. Without a descriptive title, the specific imagery is not recoverable from catalogue data alone; juried IMC submissions across recent cycles have ranged from abstract [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) studies to landscape and botanical subjects, with most works produced at [oban](/glossary/oban) scale or smaller and editioned in short runs consistent with studio mokuhanga practice.
