Description
Steady Gaze depicts a cat fixed in concentrated attention, the title pointing to the unblinking, predatory focus characteristic of feline subjects. Nishida composes such images around the eyes, using sharply registered key blocks to define the pupils and whiskers against softer color blocks for the fur. The mokuhanga technique allows for subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations across the body and background, suggesting volume without heavy modeling. Printed on [washi](/glossary/washi) with hand-burnishing by [baren](/glossary/baren), the surface retains the slight grain and absorbency that distinguishes traditional Japanese woodblock from offset reproduction. While Nishida is best known for landscapes and seasonal nature scenes — particularly Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms — his cat prints form a parallel body of work that has circulated through hangaten print fairs and small-edition publications. These intimate animal portraits share the same lyrical sensibility as his landscapes: close observation translated into restrained color and clear, calligraphic line. Steady Gaze sits within that quieter strand of his practice, where a single creature carries the full attention of the composition.
