Description
"White Waterfall" foregrounds the chromatic and tonal possibilities of the waterfall subject, with the title suggesting the cascade itself as the dominant white element against darker surrounding rock and foliage. In mokuhanga technique, the brightest whites are achieved not through pigment but through careful management of the unprinted [washi](/glossary/washi) paper, with surrounding color blocks defining the cascade by negation. The carved key block establishes the linear rhythms of falling water, while [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations on adjacent blocks model the shadows in the rock face and the depths of any catch pool below. Compared with other waterfall treatments in Nishida's body of work, "White Waterfall" emphasizes contrast and tonal restraint over saturated color. The print extends his engagement with running water as a subject and aligns with the long tradition of Japanese taki imagery while approaching it with the spare, atmospheric sensibility characteristic of his contemporary mokuhanga practice.
