Description

Table of contents spread for Shōjo Club (少女倶楽部, Shōjo kurabu), volume 1, issue 11, November 1923, with illustration by Takabatake Kashō. Shōjo kurabu, published by Kōdansha from 1923 to 1962, was one of the two leading girls' magazines of the prewar period (the other being Shōjo gahō) and the magazine for which Kashō produced some of his most influential interior illustrations. The contents spread, designed as a decorative entry to the issue, is characteristic of the way Kashō's drawings were integrated into the visual rhythm of the magazine, with his figure type recurring across covers, frontispieces, contents pages, and serialized story illustrations. The November 1923 issue stands at the very beginning of the magazine's run and shows Kashō already in command of the lyrical-illustration idiom that would define his decade. The original spread is preserved in a high-resolution scan released under a Creative Commons CC0 public-domain dedication on Wikimedia Commons.
