Description
The title "Emaki (絵巻)" places this 2024 sheet within Takahashi's ongoing daily-drawing project of the same name, begun in 2017. The traditional emaki — the illustrated handscroll that unrolls horizontally to reveal sequential narrative imagery — is here reconfigured as an accumulative archive of A4 sheets (210 x 297 mm) in pencil and pen, produced on a rhythmic daily cadence rather than as a single continuous painted scroll. A 2024 sheet carries the discrete clusters of recurring motifs that characterise the project: small figures, fragments of text, repeated marks and graphic shorthand drawn directly onto the page without the mediating matrices of relief or intaglio printmaking. Takahashi's inclusion in the 4th PATinKyoto Print Art Triennale (2025), at curator Chiba Machiko's recommendation, locates this work within an "expanded printmaking" frame, where iteration, multiplication, and the serial logic of the daily sheet stand in for the traditional plate or block. Read individually, the drawing is a single day's record; read against the larger Emaki, it is one frame in a slow-unfurling contemporary scroll.
