Description
Titled with the Finnish word teos (meaning "work"), this is the second of two studies Kalliola produced at the MI-LAB residency in Echizen in 2024. Works numbered as teos1 and teos2 in a residency context typically form a paired sequence, allowing the artist to test variations in block carving, paper dampening, or pigment density across closely related impressions. The MI-LAB Basic Training Program A emphasizes material sensitivity: the absorbency of Echizen [kozo](/glossary/kozo) [washi](/glossary/washi), the viscosity of nori-bound pigment, and the pressure differential of the [baren](/glossary/baren) as it crosses the carved keyblock. Comparative pairs let students isolate one variable at a time. Kalliola's pairing of teos1 and teos2 reflects this pedagogical structure. Within Finnish printmaking, where the influence of Outi Heiskanen and a strong intaglio lineage dominate, mokuhanga remains a comparatively recent practice. Artists returning from MI-LAB have contributed to the establishment of regional mokuhanga networks across the Nordic countries, including exhibitions and workshops linked to the International Mokuhanga Conference.
