As a second sheet in Tokitoh's Calla silkscreen output, this print continues the artist's sustained engagement with the calla lily — alongside the lotus, one of the two motifs that dominate her mature catalogue. The composition follows her established format: a single bloom isolated against an unmarked or barely-tinted ground, with the trumpet-shaped spathe curling around the central spadix. The print was drawn directly onto the screen rather than worked up from a photographic source, and the editioning involved approximately ten pulls of the squeegee, each laying down a translucent layer of close-valued grey, blue, or green that accumulates into the watercolour-like depth for which the artist is known. The differences between Calla and Calla 2 are typically small — a shift in the placement of the deepest tonal accent, a slightly different orientation of the spathe, an altered weight to the spadix — and reflect the patient, incremental nature of her studio practice rather than any wholesale reinvention of the subject.
Calla 2 was created by Ayako Tokitoh (時任 礼子).
