Calla 3 presents a single calla lily isolated against a softly toned ground, the spathe curling open to reveal the yellow spadix at its center. The composition follows the format Tokitoh has used throughout her mature work: one motif, stripped of context, allowed to occupy the sheet in near-frontal address. The print is built from approximately ten successive pulls of the squeegee, each laying down a thin, translucent layer that accumulates into the close-valued grey and pale green tonality characteristic of the artist. Because she draws each motif directly onto the silkscreen rather than working from a photograph, the contour of the spathe carries the slight unevenness of a hand-drawn line, and the internal modeling reads less as sharp tonal contrast than as a slow gathering of pigment density. The work belongs to the long calla series that anchors her practice, where small variations in posture, value, and edge softness distinguish one print from another within an otherwise restrained vocabulary.
