Description
Three Sisters depicts a trio of female figures, a grouping with deep precedent in [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e): Utamaro and Eisen produced multi-figure [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) in which three beauties were posed for compositional rhythm and contrast of attire, gesture, and expression. Kristensen's three-figure composition is likely arranged across the sheet to exploit the [oban](/glossary/oban) format's vertical or horizontal proportions, with overlapping silhouettes building depth without recourse to Western perspective. Mokuhanga technique favors the patterning of kimono or contemporary clothing through successive color blocks, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) reserved for skin tones, hair, or background graduation. The title may glance toward Chekhov as readily as toward the Japanese tradition of sibling sets, a characteristic Kristensen ambiguity that lets the print read in either register. As with Sleeping Beauty and the Nude Test prints, Three Sisters extends the bijin-ga genre by pulling its cultural references outward while keeping its means of production and visual logic anchored in mokuhanga.
