Description
This 2024 mokuhanga is Furukawa's submission to the Juried International Mokuhanga Exhibition held at the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen, Japan, where it was selected for the Asia regional showcase. Echizen, in Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan's principal centers of [washi](/glossary/washi) papermaking, and IMC 2024 brought together practitioners from across the global mokuhanga community to present new work, attend technical demonstrations, and engage with the regional craft infrastructure. Juried submissions for the IMC exhibitions are typically produced specifically for the conference and are evaluated on technical command of water-based woodblock printing as well as artistic vision. The print is executed in mokuhanga, the water-based technique that distinguishes Japanese woodblock practice from oil-based Western relief printing — pigments are bound with rice paste (nori), brushed onto moistened blocks, and transferred to dampened washi with a [baren](/glossary/baren). Furukawa's inclusion in the Asia regional exhibition places her work within the contemporary continuation of mokuhanga inside its country of origin, in dialogue with the broader international network organized through the International Mokuhanga Association (IMA).
