Description
This print was selected for the Oceania regional exhibition at the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC 2024) held in Echizen, Japan, a region historically associated with [washi](/glossary/washi) papermaking. Submissions to the IMC juried exhibitions are produced using the water-based mokuhanga technique, in which pigments are bound with rice paste (nori) and printed by hand using a [baren](/glossary/baren) onto dampened washi. The selection process privileges work that demonstrates considered use of the medium's distinctive qualities — layered transparencies, the soft tonal gradations achievable through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi), and the tactile registration of the woodblock's grain in the printed surface. Yates's inclusion in Echizen followed her earlier selection for IMC 2021 in Nara, marking sustained engagement with the international mokuhanga community across consecutive triennial conferences. Her participation reflects the position of Australian mokuhanga practitioners within a broader global network of artists working outside the traditional [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) workshop system, applying Edo-period printing methods to contemporary subject matter and personal artistic vocabularies.
