Description
"Strain One's Ears" is an abstract paper print in which Uchikoba Eiko uses the material properties of [washi](/glossary/washi) itself as a primary expressive element. The title — evoking the physical and cognitive act of focusing attention on barely perceptible sounds — suggests a composition organized around tension, stillness, and subtle variation rather than legible imagery. Uchikoba's practice treats the printing surface as subject rather than mere support, and this work likely exploits the fibrous texture, translucency, and dimensional qualities of the paper to register fine tonal gradations or tactile relief that reward close, attentive looking analogous to careful listening. The miniature print format, appropriate to the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition where this work received the Excellence Prize in 2023, concentrates these effects within a compressed pictorial space, amplifying the sense of quiet intensity the title proposes. The Awagami mill, based in Yamashiro, Tokushima Prefecture, has long supplied washi to printmakers internationally; Uchikoba's engagement with paper as both medium and theme aligns with that institution's emphasis on the material culture of hand-papermaking.
