Description
Padgett's submission to the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC 2024) was selected for the Americas regional exhibition held in Echizen, a region historically associated with [washi](/glossary/washi) paper production dating to the sixth century. As a juried IMC exhibition piece, the work was produced using water-based pigments applied with brush and printed by hand-rubbed [baren](/glossary/baren) onto washi, in keeping with the traditional mokuhanga method that distinguishes the medium from oil-based Western relief printing. IMC juried submissions are typically constrained in dimension and edition size, prompting practitioners to demonstrate technical control of registration ([kento](/glossary/kento)), gradation ([bokashi](/glossary/bokashi)), and pigment saturation within a compact format. Padgett's selection for both IMC 2021 in Nara and IMC 2024 in Echizen places this print within a sustained body of work engaged with the international mokuhanga revival — a contemporary movement of non-Japanese practitioners adopting the materials and registration techniques developed during the Edo and Meiji periods. The Echizen submission represents his second consecutive juried inclusion, marking continued recognition within the practitioner community gathered triennially around the IMC.
