Consumed by the Never Was (2022), a woodblock print by William Evertson, is rendered entirely in black and white with dense, high-contrast linework. Two seated figures in mid-20th-century dress — a woman in a full skirt on a low stool and a man in a suit in an armchair, both open-mouthed — are hemmed in by a precarious, towering stack of more than a dozen vintage box television sets, each screen showing a different scene of faces or figures. Dense cross-hatching covers the floor and background, giving the composition a cluttered, claustrophobic feel.
