Description

Romance is a copper-plate etching with applied gold leaf, the technical pairing that defines a substantial portion of Akino's output at Graphic Studio Dublin. The title leaves the imagery open — the print may treat the subject through emblematic still-life or figurative reference rather than narrative scene. Akino's etching line is typically fine and closely worked, with passages of aquatint or open-bite providing tonal weight; the gold leaf, applied after printing, supplies a non-printed surface that picks up ambient light. The combination places the work within the tradition of metallic ground in East Asian decorative painting — particularly the Rinpa school's use of gold — translated into Western intaglio. Within Akino's career, Romance belongs to the body of small-format etchings produced alongside her larger Cooley Peninsula landscape prints, in which she explores subject matter that is more interior or symbolic than topographical.
