Yu Chengyou

Yu Chengyou is one of China's most popular and widely collected contemporary printmakers, a traditionalist whose elegant woodcuts embrace classical themes and techniques while speaking to a modern international audience.

Born in 1953 in Shandong Province, Yu studied at Jixi Normal College and trained with printmakers of the Great Northern Wilderness School in the early 1980s, connecting him to one of China's most important postwar printmaking traditions. He worked at the Jixi Mass Arts Centre in Heilongjiang Province from 1987 to 2002 before transitioning to full-time professional practice. He works as a professional printmaker at the Heilongjiang Provincial Printmaking Institute and serves as deputy director of the Heilongjiang Provincial Art Museum.

Yu's early prints create a strongly traditional atmosphere, depicting vases, bowls, and fans set against backgrounds of calligraphic classical poetry. These compositions celebrate the material culture of traditional Chinese life with a refined simplicity that recalls Song Dynasty aesthetics. Since 2000, his focus has shifted toward the natural beauty of the Chinese landscape, particularly the birch forests, wetlands, and snow-covered terrain of Heilongjiang Province in China's northeast.

Working with the traditional woodcut technique, Yu creates limited editions typically ranging from thirty to one hundred and fifty copies, plus artist proofs. His prints are notable for their subtle tonal variations and restrained color palettes, achieving atmospheric effects that belie the bold, graphic nature of the woodcut medium.

Yu's work has received numerous national awards, including the Silver Prize for 'Night of Village' at the Sixth National Art Exhibition in 1984 and the Golden Prize for 'Tea' from the Japanese Association for the Promotion of Chinese Prints in 1992. His prints are held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and in collections worldwide. He is a member of the China Artists Association and is represented by Ronin Gallery in New York.
