Description
This woodcut presents a winter alpine scene in which a frozen or cold-water lake occupies the lower register of the composition while snow-covered peaks rise above it. Yu Chengyou's handling of the color blue in a winter landscape requires careful ink mixing and layered printing passes to render the particular cold luminosity of glacial or highland water. The contrast between the warm whites of the snowfields and the cool blue of the lake surface is a central pictorial problem the work addresses. Mountain landscapes of this kind draw on both Chinese shanshui painting conventions and the more direct, physically expressive approach of woodcut, where the carved grain of the block can reinforce the texture of rock faces and snow accumulation.
