Biography
Toshikage Osanai (小山内俊景, born 1947) is a Japanese woodblock printmaker working in the sosaku-hanga (creative print) tradition. Born in Aomori Prefecture in the far north of Honshu, he graduated from the Art Department of Yamagata University, where he studied under Hayashiba.
Osanai adheres to the sosaku-hanga principle that the artist should be the sole creator of the work—designing, carving, and printing each image personally, without the division of labor that characterized the older ukiyo-e and shin-hanga publishing systems. His prints, typically produced on traditional washi (Japanese handmade paper), depict rural and seasonal landscapes with a graphic boldness and simplified compositions that reflect the movement's emphasis on personal artistic expression.
