$300–$2,500. Common prints: $300–$800. Key value factors: Amano's sosaku-hanga prints are modestly priced. Bold, well-preserved abstract works are most valued.
Description (Part 2), dated July 1957, belongs to the same multi-part publication series that includes the Colophon and various numbered songs. The title plays with the relationship between visual art and verbal explanation: a "description" ordinarily translates visual experience into words, but here Amano reverses the process, making the act of describing itself into a visual event on paper.
This ink-on-paper woodblock print works within the constraints of monochrome printing, using the full range of tonal values available between pure black and unprinted paper. As part two of the description section, it implies a continuation from a preceding image, creating a sequential relationship that mimics the linear flow of written text. Amano's conceptual playfulness with the conventions of publishing and textuality places this work within the broader postwar Japanese art movement that questioned traditional boundaries between visual art, literature, and design.
