$300–$2,500. Common prints: $300–$800. Key value factors: Amano's sosaku-hanga prints are modestly priced. Bold, well-preserved abstract works are most valued.
Inner Motion (Embrace), created in 1963, pairs a kinetic concept with a human gesture. Inner motion suggests energy contained within a boundary, movement that does not manifest as external displacement but vibrates within a closed system. The embrace amplifies this reading: two forms drawing together, enclosing space between them, creating a zone of contained energy where their interaction generates heat and pressure.
This ink and color on paper woodblock print translates these bodily and physical concepts into abstract visual form. Amano's carving creates shapes that appear to curve toward each other, their boundaries implying the compression of space between approaching surfaces. The color relationships reinforce the sense of contained warmth, with tonal contrasts suggesting depth within the enclosed area. Created during Amano's early 1960s period of sustained experimentation, this work shows his ability to evoke physical and emotional states through purely non-representational means.
