Description
Morning 30 is part of Amano's sustained Morning series, in which the transitional light of early day becomes the primary subject. By the thirtieth iteration, the series would have moved well beyond any initial naturalistic reference, with Amano refining the same compositional vocabulary — horizontal color bands, geometric light forms, and precisely registered color areas — into increasingly spare arrangements. The print likely divides the picture plane into a small number of color zones corresponding to sky, horizon, and earth or water at dawn. Warm ochres or cool grays may describe the particular quality of pre-sunrise light. Amano's self-taught technique involves multiple woodblock passes with careful alignment, and any soft tonal gradients across the color fields were achieved through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) rather than halftone or blending.
